FISHERS ISLAND FERRY DISTRICT
The Ferry District is seeking to hire one or more deckhands to be based at its terminal in New London, CT. The Ferry District is looking to fill full and part-time positions.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under the direct supervision of the Ferry Captain, an employee in this class performs various duties aboard a ferryboat between Fishers Island and New London, assists passengers as necessary and helps to maintain the ferryboat. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
- Steer a ferryboat between Fishers Island, NY and New London, CT.
- Perform a deck watch to ensure the security of the ferryboat and cargo.
- Assist passengers on the ferryboat as necessary.
- Load and discharges vehicles.
- Perform proper bridge lookout.
- Periodically monitor engine room conditions.
- Assists in the general maintenance of ferryboats, such as chipping, grinding, priming, and painting.
- Clean and maintain New London terminal and terminal equipment.
- May operate forklifts and tractors in order to assist the freight department.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the procedures necessary to safely steer a ferryboat; thorough knowledge of the ferryboat routes; good knowledge of security measures for the safety of the ferryboat and the passengers; good knowledge of the maintenance of ferryboats and terminal equipment; skill in steering and maintenance of ferryboats; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public; ability to understand and carry out oral instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- 18+ Years Old
- Pass USCG Drug Test
